On January the 15th 2009, the engines of a plane, piloted by Captain Sullenberger, known as “Sully”, were disabled by a flock of birds. Having only moments to make his decision, Sully glided the plane into the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all on board.
Initially heralded as a hero, Sully was later to find himself involved in an investigation which questioned his decision to land in the Hudson River, rather than the local LaGuardia Airport.
The film is directed by Clint Eastwood and was awarded the Japan Academic Prize for an outstanding foreign language film in 2017. Tom Hanks gives an outstanding performance as Sully, backed by his co-pilot, Aaron Eckhart, played by Jeff Skiles.
Sully is a film which is gripping from start to finish and hi-lights the dilemmas of aircraft pilots as they seek to make life and death decisions in a matter of seconds. It is his years of experience which enable Sully to persist in the confidence that, despite reconstructions to the contrary, he made the right decision and saved the lives of 155 people.
