The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

This film is a charming story of a boy who, by his perseverance, saved his village from starvation. Born in Kasungu, Malawi, William Kamkwamba has a desire to learn. Unfortunately, his parents are farmers, very poor and unable to pay his school fees. William’s science teacher, who is having a secret relationship with William’s sister, is pressurised into letting him attend class and gain access to the school’s library where he learns about electrical engineering and energy production.

When crops fail, due to drought, William conceives a way to construct a water pump to irrigate the fields. His road to success is not an easy one but his determination drives him on.

The film was written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor who also played the role of Trywell Kamkwamba, William’s father. William is played by Maxwell Simba.

For those of you who admire someone with vision and determination, this film is delightful, enhanced by the fact that it’s a true story.
